Motive SmartBridge

The Motive SmartBridge background task is installed with Verizon Online’s software which is included with their residential DSL service. It has an autoupdate prompt which runs at startup. I disabled it on my computer simply because I don’t know exactly what it does. Since I don’t have a use for it and anything running uses up some memory, I’ll keep it that way. Hey Folks:
In my case Motive Smartbridge had to do with NetAssistant, a trouble shooter for my Internet Service Provider (Sympatico). I simply did the control panel/add or remove programs thing…it was in the list as Net Assistant, click remove & NO MORE MOTIVE SMARTBRIDGE :O)

After I disabled motivesmartbridge in msconfig (part of the BT broadband download) my OE ‘switch identity’ cursor has stopped rolling to the bottom name in the list; (I’m using w98es). What the hell was it playing at moving cursors?

This is the best and most informative place I found when I searched Motive Smartbridge on google. Thanks! I just uninstalled Verizon Online Support Center and it fixed the problem.

As all of you, I just got the Motive Smartbridge update box this morning. I clicked update, but thankfully, it did not complete for some reason. After that, I went to Google and found this excellent Blog. Thank you Elliot. After reading this, I am going to do exactly as was directed to provent the problem.

However, I have another problem sometimes with my computer that I was wondering if anyone has run in to……

I have Verizon DSl and have had for about 15 months. For about the last 6 months, when I log on to my computer (if I have not been on for a while), and I try to access the internet, it will not work. I always have to restart my computer and then it works fine. When my computer is shutting down to restart, I get a dialog box that states: CCAPP (I think this is it) shutting down. Does anyone know exaclty what this is. It is directly related to my problem, however I can not get anyone to answer it. I have called Verizon about this and they have pointed to Microsoft indicating it is their problem, however, I have a hard time thinking it is Microsoft problem cause when I start my computer again, all is fine.

Thanks again for the great blog. I hope someone else has run into the problem I just mentioned.

    Have a great day

    Doug

I have win-98/cox fast connect(phx Az). I get the dialog box that reads- Motive directory has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. apprx. once in three or four times when I start my pc. Just recently started. Any suggestions?

Thank you Elliot and anyone else who gave their time to help us non-technical people. I had no idea it had anything to do with Verizon. On AOL it’s very clear it’s an AOL update– same with Earthlink. Why can’t Verizon leave us a copy of our mail on the Server. Even if in the cc or bcc or in the group being sent to, they still give me half a copy. I find this really irritating. Does anyone else feel the same way?

I deleted Motive but now I have one that appears and says: “Internet explorer has encountered a problem and must shut down” This stuff is a nuisance. Thanks – glenmorgan.

I have the same problem mentioned by Doug on 3/9/05. After my computer sits awhile I must reboot in order to get back on line. It is not a problem with the modem, as the signal goes to other computer using powerblock. It seems to be within my computer, which is directly connected to the modem, using Windows XP. Verizon is no help with this, and I have not been able to find any leads. Appreciate any help with this. Harvey

Wow! Unchecking Motive SmartBridge (from Startup) also stopped the Revenue Ad window from popping up. That’s been bugging me for a long time. How did that happen?

  17. k says:

Thank you! I thought I would never get rid of the Motive Smartbridge Update Notice. It’s been bugging me for two weeks. Since I am computer stupid, I thought I didn’t know what was installed and what wasn’t. Thanks for all your help. You made it easy.

Thanks for the info! Uninstalled Verizon Support in Add/Remove Programs.

    Some notes:
    – The program does indeed cause issues with Outlook Express. (Choose ‘Switch Identity’ and the selection will move to the bottom of the list. Or, choose spell checker, and the selection will move to the bottom of the suggested words.)
    – Internet connection appears to drop more frequently when uninstalled. (Repairing the connection in XP fixes it for ~15 mins.)
    – Spontaneous reboots occur (0x0000050 I think), possibly related to dropping connection or looking for uninstalled program

For Doug and Harvey: CCAPP is a Norton program. It seems to be the backbone for any and all Norton programs, whether Antivirus, System Works, or Internet Security. Try checking with Norton (Symantec) for more answers. Or use this or the other page mentioned here for info on CCAPP. Will add more if I learn more.

For Elliot and others: great info in msb. I’m wondering if it could have been initiated by Microsoft, and they made Verizon put it in their folder. Seems like most people have Verizon dsl with msn bundled in.

Hey, this was really helpful. The Motive Smartbridge thing has been bothering me for months, but I didn’t know what it was. I knew it was something from Verizon but I didn’t act on it because I was scared. Now it no longer bothers me. I got rid of Verizon Online Support Center too. Thanks

well i have had some billing issues it seems like just before they lauch a suspension for non payment they launch Motive SmartBridge and within 24 to 48 hours my system goes down. i have become wise to it. it is like some kind of webform that updates for different reasons in my case it was that.

  23. Anonymous says:

oh by the way message above i blocked it with norton internet security

I just deny Motive Smartbridge access to the internet via my ZoneAlarm. Would this keep Motive from doing (or not doing)whatever it is that it does (or doesn’t do)? I’m still not sure what is and it’s purpose so i just prefer that it not run.
