Largest Employer in Los Angeles

It look me awhile to find this information, so I thought I’d post about it and hopefully help someone somewhere find this info faster than I did.

I read a random article about Campaign UCLA, and in the “About UCLA” paragraph at the bottom, it said: “California’s largest university, UCLA enrolls approximately 38,000 students per year…UCLA employs more than 27,000 faculty and staff… I remember reading that USC is the largest private employer in the city of Los Angeles, so I thought I’d look up the numbers and see how they compare.
In 2002, the latest employers in Los Angeles County were:

But this list seems to include (1) some companies outside of Los Angeles, and (2) employees that are not employed in Los Angeles. From the LA Downtown news, the largest downtown employer:

COMPANY

  • Name
  • Address

  • Website
  • EMPLOYEES

  • Downtown
  • Companywide
  • PROFILE

  • Year company was founded
  • Parent company
  • Corporate headquarters

  • Another note: “Los Angeles is the largest city in California and the second-largest urban area in the nation.” Source (The only larger city is New York.)

your recollection of what you read is wrong. USC is the biggest employer in the ‘hood.’ That doesn’t include downtown, and Long Beach isn’t anywhere near it, and we’d all like to work in Pasadena. We’re talking about that really poor neighborhood, brutha, and at 10,000 employees, second place isn’t even close.

What part of “largest private employer in Los Angeles” don’t you understand?

      — That means it’s not public or government, such as UCLA, which is a PUBLIC university and is, de facto an agency of the State of California, and therefore is taxpayer owned; and

      — That means it’s not a publicly-traded corporation, which means it’s effectively owned by its investing shareholders.

So yes, the factoid stands, despite your partisan annoyance at same.
