Caltech Braun Athletic Center

I went to the Braun Athletic Center at the California Institute of Technology. As a new JPL employee, they gave me a one-day free pass.

It’s a nice facility; one of their newer gyms, according to the guy at the reception desk. They have fields for baseball, soccer, rugby; basketball courts, swimming pools, racquetball courts, weight machines, treadmills, rowers, ellipticals, and biking machines. I tried all the indoor stuff. Now I’m really sore today.

I’ve been eating a lot at JPL lately. This morning I had an enormous breakfast burrito with ham, and now I just bought an Avocado Roll for $3.95 and a bottle of Naked-brand orange juice (“A pound of oranges in every bottle”). I’m justifying today’s expenditures by blaming them on my workout yesterday.
To go to the Caltech gym again, it would cost me $5 per day, or $50 for the whole summer. I’m tempted to opt for the $50 membership.

Cosmo works! Feed URLs changed

I finally understand how Cosmo works. Of course, there’s still much to learn, but I have successfully changed the feed URIs from /feed/atom/1.0/elliot/calendar to /feed/elliot/calendar. Yay! That was my first goal that I made for myself. So now it should only be a matter of work and time until I get other feed formats implemented :)

The files I had to change were:

  • \cosmo_trunk\src\webapp\WEB-INF\urlrewrite.xml
  • home/collection.jsp
  • \cosmo_trunk\src\main\java\org\osaf\cosmo\feed\FeedServlet.java

Of course, I should also remember to set the proper values in:

  • \osaf-server-bundle-0.4-0.2rc1\tomcat\conf\server.xml

And remember that jsp files update automatically, java files require maven -Dmaven.test.skip=true war:inplace, and xml files seem to require a server restart (but I’m not certain about that).

JPL Vanpool

I just got a call from the JPL vanpool coordinator. There are 3 other summer interns also looking for a spot. Wow, it would be interesting to meet them and talk with them, see how their first 2 weeks were. I’ve been driving myself because I was staying at Jordan’s condo in Pasadena. But now that Jon’s staying there, vanpooling is a good option. I just need to wake up early enough to make the 6:10 am leaving time. I thought I was too late again today, just barely, but I didn’t try. My car’s clock is 8 minutes fast, but I need that. I should try to get there by 6:00 am, so I should leave at 5:50 am. The earlier the better. There’s always a spot, she says, so I can go anytime. I’ll go tomorrow. Since I drove today, maybe I might as well use my pass for one free day at the Caltech Recreational Facilities.

Why have periods inside quotation marks?

I was reading about Internet Explorer 7 and that they’ve turned on ClearType by default. I ran through the Windows XP ClearType tuner, and made ClearType look acceptable on this Compaq TFT8030 powered by pixelworks. Apparently it uses the rare BGR subpixel order. Then I read about using double spaces after periods (don’t), and about why periods go inside quotation marks. Apparently, the periods in typewriters could break off. Then I read Quotation Marks: Where Do the Periods and Commas Go–And Why?. There are some interesting ideas there I’ve never heard of before. Notably:

  • Universal American usage always puts commas and periods inside quotation marks, regardless of logic.
  • Other sentence-enders, like question marks, are based on logic: they go inside when they’re part of the quote, outside therwise.
  • There is an exception for when the item is just a letter or a number, in which case it always goes outside.
    • The buried treasure was marked on the map with a large “X”.
    • On this scale, the highest ranking is a “1″, not a “10″.
  • With parenthetical citation, the period follows the parenthesis, of course.
  • This is all strictly American usage, and the British just do it logically.

I do it the British way because it’s more technically accurate, which is extremely important when dealing with the exacting nature of computers.

Windows Vista Observations

Following up on my first impressions, here is a list of observations according to beta 2.

  • Notepad’s icon has changed
  • Start button is circular without text
  • Search boxes all over
  • Buttons look widescreen
  • Font smoothing is on by default
  • Internet Explorer 7+ for Vista, 7 for others
    • IE anti-phishing

Microsoft Phishing Filter.PNG

    • IE tabs
  • Paint icon has changed
    • Color palette is on top
    • Save dialog looks different
    • Default save format is PNG (yay, no more BMPs)
  • Windows DVD Maker is new
  • Feels very snappy on my Dell Inspiron 300m, 1.2 GHz Pentium M, 632 MB AM, 15 GB HDD (NTFS Partition for Vista)
  • Windows Sidebar is exactly like Google Desktop Sidebar
    • Especially the random images
  • Windows Vista won’t connect to my wireless network, but it worked on second try (repair)

Microsoft Windows Vista Beta 2

I ordered the DVD and it arrived a couple days ago. I’ve installed it on my Dell Inspiron 300m laptop, and it’s working great. I’m quite impressed. I can see this being a success. Internet Explorer still stinks, but it’s far better than it has ever been before. Microsoft recommends 15 GB free, so I gave it a 15 GB partition (exactly), using an amazingly excellent partitioning program called GParted, which runs from Linux on a Live CD. Very cool. I’ve got to admit.. it’s getting better

One of the first things I did, of course..

Downloading Firefox with Google Toolbar.PNG

Firefox seems to work ok on Vista.. I’ve run into a few odd problems. Vista didn’t have my wireless network driver (despite it being Centrino), but when I connected the Ethernet and got on the web, Microsoft Update (formerly Windows Update) snagged the driver from the web.

My weight and height after summer conference

After returning from the IVTCF summer conference at Catalina, which I mentioned earlier but never got aruond to writing about, I used the height and weight machine to see what my stats were. The date was 5/20/06, and at 12:14 pm, here’s what it told me:

Weight: 121.2 lb
Height: 5′ 8″

BMI: 17

Here’s how to read it (I only typed here the relevant parts, but it had spit out info for all ranges):

Less than 20: underweight

Ideal weight and height (men): 5′ 8″ — 152 lb
Dressed and with shoes

Approx. Calorie Guide per 100 gr: bread 240, butter 750

A Guide to Calories Expended per Minute: Dance — 5,00 Cal, Running — 18,00 Cal.
