One of the strangest things I’ve ever experienced happened last night. I wrote a paper and had no idea what I wrote. My mind totally blanked. How do I know? Because when I woke up this morning, I read the paper– and was absolutely shocked by what I saw. This was an abstract for Core 103. Here’s what I read:

The scientific knowledge gained from the game is what fuels the energy of many students. Today, like back then, we can’t reject circulation anymore. In part, this is because sciences get small groups. On the other hand, I’m an engineer and have never had a class in VKC.

However, I’ve heard that staying on the field can be nice whenever we have to play the music. I should probably downloaded Ruckus again, and look for music. Good luck trying to find anything that’s not copyrighted, and if it’s under copyright, you need written permission from the author. Personally, the best way is Reggie Bush is with a straight-on tackle, since anything else you try to do will be well-known.

Maybe that’s not so shocking, until you realize that this was blended into the middle of a response to an article called “How Harvey and his Contemporaries Played the Game of Truth”– basically a paper about the medical doctor William Harvey (1578–1657). What in the world was I thinking when I wrote that?! It makes absolutely no sense at all. It’s not related to my paper and I don’t remember writing it at all. I wouldn’t be surprised if I somehow absent-mindedly opened the wrong file or copy and pasted some website. If not, where did that stuff come from?!

I’ve noticed that emotions play a large part in everything people do, myself included. Each and every thought and action is dependent on the mood, emotional state, and current disposition of all the people involved. It’s personally much more comforting to me to think that things can be perfectly logical, perfectly reasonable and predictable. But that’s simply not the case at all. At all. Really, people make decisions based on their moods, and their moods change wildly and irrationally. I think people like to think of emotional swings as being restricted to some certain group, like women, who certainly may be more prone to being more affected by feelings. But is that just wishful thinking? Don’t even engineers have times of happiness and satisfaction, and times of sadness and desperation, without the appropriate rational reasons behind it? I think so, and that’s a bothersome thought.

Yesterday, Theo asked me how it is that I’m so funny. It’s true, I often crack subtle jokes and try to make up clever responses. But more often, I’m just saying what comes naturally.

That I’m funny is a compliment I’ve heard several times this year. To be honest, it makes me feel really good every time I hear it. It’s good to know that I’m somehow benefiting others, making their days brighter and happier. On the other hand, I wonder what exactly it is that makes others laugh. I wonder how long I can keep this up, what would happen if someday I just couldn’t think of anything humorous anymore. It’s a little frightening, maybe because I like being funny so much.

It reminds me of days many years ago when I would spend hours on AIM. This was around middle school, 6th thru 8th grade. It wouldn’t just be small talk. I’d talk about serious issues, too. About life, about programming, about gaming and about fun. I was part of a Pokemon fan club known as “Clan Dragon”, abbreviated DRGN, and we often spent time in chat rooms, just thinking, typing, and making each other laugh out loud (LOL, literally).

In real life, I was a loser, quite depressed and not having a single “good” friend. But online, I was well-known as someone who was clever, witty, quick-thinking and fun to chat with. It was an interesting time, a strange experience now that I think back on it. On the other hand, I wonder if I’m representing it accurately, looking back on it all these years later. But even at the time, I knew it was unique. I knew it was a special experience I couldn’t get anywhere else but on the Internet. It wasn’t bad. It provided an escape that was as educational as it was entertaining. I think it’s really the only place where my true personality was allowed to come out. Using computers and communicating online comes so naturally to me.

It’s shifting today. Unlike my middle school years, I no longer chat online for more than a few minutes at a time. I guess I’ve had enough of it. It’s taught me well, helped me to gain experience with my corny responses and cheesy jokes… and I think it’s starting to transition into the real world. When I talk now, there’s some reflection of my “AIM past” in most of what I say. And I think that’s a good thing, because instant messengers have somehow taught me to communicate effectively.
If you think I’m funny, tell me. It’s a great encouragement, and I love to hear it.

Apple.com states:

To get a sense of just how big the virus problem is, search for “virus” at both Apple and Microsoft.

Aside from the fact that the number of results is hardly a reliable indication of anything except perhaps the search engine’s design, I don’t think this really helps to show Apple’s point. Here’s the linked-to results page on Apple.com:

89 results on Apple.com. And here’s the one on Microsoft.com:

Just 54 results for Microsoft.com. Viruses aren’t a problem for Windows. Users have to be smart and use anti-virus software, but if they do that, they’ll be fine.

I don’t have much personal opinion to say about this, so I’ll pull a few quotes from news articles.

George Lucas made a public announcement today, September 20, saying that his Lucasfilm Foundation will give $175 million to the University of Southern California. This is the largest single donation the university has ever received. Part of the money will be used for the construction of a new 137,000-square foot, state-of-the-art home for the university’s acclaimed cinema school.

A groundbreaking ceremony for the school’s new building is scheduled for Oct. 4.

Lucas, who created the “Star Wars” and “Indiana Jones” films, made the donation through the Lucasfilm Foundation. Forbes magazine in March estimated his net worth as $3.5 billion.

USC, founded in 1880, is home to the oldest film school in the United States, and today is one of the most selective universities in the nation, also popular among filmmakers who have used its buildings as movie sets. Movies filmed at USC include “Forrest Gump” which filmed using Marks Hall and the Bovard Administration Building. Other movies include “Legally Blonde,” “Road Trip,” “The Girl Next Door,” “Ghostbusters,” and “The Graduate”.
