I installed Ubuntu on my main laptop (the ThinkPad Z61t), and I want to do some PHP development, so I looked into installing Dreamweaver on it. I have a student license for Studio 8. Most of the pages I pulled up with Google show that installing Dreamweaver 8 on Ubuntu is pretty easy. You can right-click the installer .exe and run it with WINE (after you install WINE, if necessary). I didn’t do it, but I’m impressed. Nowadays it’s getting easier and easier to use Linux. Unfortunately, wireless is still tricky. I did get WPA-PSK to work, but it was a little tricky, even on the latest version of Ubuntu. (But that’s another story.)

I just installed Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron on my ThinkPad Z61t. It pretty much works out-of-the-box. The wireless adapter did not work while running from the LiveCD, but it works now that it’s installed. Linux has truly come a long way. One of the things that holds back many users is the superior visuals of Windows and Mac OS X. That’s no longer the case. With Beryl/Compiz/Compiz Fusion, Ubuntu Linux looks every bit as good as those other operating systems. But it’s poorly documented, and it was hard for me to figure out how to get started with it. I tried lots of Google searches to find what I was looking for, but nothing turned up. So here’s my guide to Compiz, a sort of “FAQ” or how-to guide and tutorial.

I heard on the radio today that consumer confidence is down. Yet some people think consumer confidence is up, based on what they see in retail stores. “The people who have money are spending it,” one lady said on the radio, “while the ones who don’t lay around at home watching TV.”

You get what you pay for. Today I went to Taco Bell for a late lunch and took a look at their new “Big Bell Value Menu.” I picked up a 99 cent 1/2 lb. Cheesy Bean & Rice Burrito and an 89 cent Caramel Apple Empanada.

Has anyone heard of the site themiddleclass.org? They advertise with Google AdWords, but their site is bogus. They claim to support the middle class, but the whole thing is a sham. I haven’t looked into it extensively, but it looks sinister. I spent a few minutes gathering other people’s thoughts, and here’s what I found…

I love reading about what JPL is doing, especially since I did my internship with them in Summer 2006. On May 25, the Phoenix lander successfully touched down on Mars. While reading about this, the thing that really struck me is the fact that more than half of all Mars missions have failed. Some even call it a curse. Most notable are the failures of the Mars Climate Orbiter and Mars Polar Lander. Wikipedia has interesting articles on these. Russia also had many failures, such as Mars 96, an orbiter launched on November 16, 1996.

For the past week I’ve been at InterVarsity’s Summer Conference at Campus by the Sea on Catalina Island. It was a very nice experience, and a chance to spend a week away from computers and electronics. I also did several hikes around the campsite, which was good exercise. I need to exercise more often, especially since I’m still planning on doing a backpacking trip to Mt. Whitney the last week of June, starting in Onion Valley and taking the Kearsarge Pass.

Part 2 of Ron Paul’s speech at the College of Idaho 4/25/08. Part 1 here

We were allied with Osama bin Laden when he was a freedom fighter in Afghanistan. Now that we are the occupiers, he’s a terrorist. Obviously, our foreign policy is screwed up. Let’s change it. It’s not hard to do. It’s described in the Constitution and by the Founding Fathers.
