The reason your presidential vote does not count has to do with our founding fathers. The reason that the founders created the Electoral College is that they were afraid of direct election to the Presidency. They feared a tyrant could manipulate public opinion and come to power. They believed that the electors would be able to insure that only a qualified person becomes President. They believed that with the Electoral College no one would be able to manipulate the citizenry. It would act as check on an electorate that might be duped. They did not trust the population to make the right choice. The founding fathers also believed that the Electoral College had the advantage of being a group that met only once and thus could not be manipulated over time by foreign governments or others.

Every other vote you cast (whether it be for a US rep/senator, state governor, state rep/senator, mayor, councilman, sheriff, judge, or state initiative/proposition to change the state constitution) however...DOES COUNT! So, while it may make sense to say you are not voting because you can't pick the president, it makes no sense at all to say you are not voting for any other elected official or initiative.

I am well educated Computer Engineer that makes good money but I do not agree that our vote makes a difference. The electoral college fools the masses into thinking they have a say. The people do not choose the president the politicians in the electoral college have that power. Look at when the idiot Bush won and he lost the popular vote. I will never vote again until this is fixed. Why should I waste $45.00 per hour on a vote that makes absolutely no difference. And people are wondering why U.S. citizens don't vote lol. I can not believe this is how it works.

Even if you vote for a candidate that does not win, that candidate will be encouraged to continue to speak out on your behalf. If your candidate did not get any votes, he will think that no one agrees with him, and will give up. If he at least see support from a good number of votes, he and people like him will continue their work to garner more support for the next election. In that way, your vote does make a difference.
