Why are so many places called “Commons”? You have Leavey Upper Commons, where I am now, and you have Leavey Lower Commons, you have Upstairs Commons for an elegant sit-down dining experience, you have Commons for sushi and Mainstreet, you have Downstairs Commons for Mexican food, Chinese food, and subs, and there’s probably another place with Commons in its name. Until I came to USC, I didn’t spend time in “Commons.” It makes me feel like I’m in England or something, though I’ve never been there. Did they consider calling this place a computer lab or a study room? How about “hang-out area”?

Compared to any of my own computers that I use, these computers are ridiculously fast. It feels much snappier than anything else I’ve used. Everything on the internet seems to load instantly. This is what computing should be like. My only complaints are that this keyboard sucks (it’s a typical Dell keyboard) and that ITS (Information Technology Services) uses software that sets the monitor to a nonnative resolution. It’s a 17″ LCD monitor (Dell 1703FP), and its native resolution is 1280×1024. Come on. Things are so much sharper when the monitor is run at its native resolution!
ThinkGeek sells a shirt called Dead Hex People. It has a riddle on it which goes like this:
I just got a call from Mark at USC ITS Security. Seems they disabled my SCF/Aludra account because I had installed a tagboard script which opened a backdoor on the server. Hopefully I won’t be making that mistake again. And when I write PHP in the future, I’ll try to have a mind for security. But really, I should take the web security class here to really figure out what to do.
