I’m reading Ender’s Shadow, generously lent to me by Tiffany L. One amazing part of the book reminded me that evil is not a product of deprivation. I think I’ve blogged about this idea before, so if you find it, link me to it 
Some people have the idea that people are mean to each other because they’re poor, or somehow desperate. But that’s not the case at all. I’m looking for a new hosting account for my dad’s websites, and I don’t like the fact that DreamHost, while good, promises unrealistically high disk space and bandwidth. The service becomes unbearably slow and unstable long before all of my space is used.
Here’s a very interesting section from one of Paul Graham’s essays.
What really stands out to me:
- Fear of elitism causes lost opportunities. If all universities are roughly equal in quality, then none are especially good. The best professors are spread out, making them less productive. And no one university will be good enough to attract talent from abroad.
- The Germans invented the modern university, but now they suck because in the 1930s they excluded Jews. Hopefully nothing like that will cause the downfall of our universities. We love Jews and people of all races… right?
- Competition is key. It’s a good thing many of the best universities in the US are private. Government-controlled institutions just don’t work.
Joel Comm’s old affiliate login was at adsense-secrets.com, but he’s moving it to affurl.com, and thus the old system doesn’t have anything for his latest product, a book called Click Here To Order. He sent an email telling his affiliates to promote the product, but we can’t access stats yet. In fact, he says:
Maybe I’m just stupid, but playing a simple sound with the iPhone SDK was ridiculously hard to do. I finally go it working.
