Life is nothing without goals: 2008

Yesterday, I talked with my friend Steven. We’ve been friends for many, many years. However, he has selected a much different path than mine, and we haven’t talked much recently. The main thing that struck me from our conversation is that he doesn’t know what to do with his life. What to spend his time on, what kind of job to get, what kind of life to live. He’s taking some time off from school, and it’s mainly for the purpose of finding a job. But he has only vague ideas of the job he’s seeking. My impression was that he needed motivation.

I recently picked up this small booklet from a local Target retailer. It was a great read, especially for a disorganized person like me. (Note, though, that organization is learned, not inherited.) A good portion of the book talks about setting very specific plans, missions, and goals for cleaning up and organizing. Why do they spend so much time on such trivial talk, when they could instead be getting down to the nitty gritty techniques that really make a difference? (These techniques are also included.) Google AdSense Image Ads

I just swapped the text ads on the GoogleCommunity.com channel “GCvBGuest2ndLargeRect” for text and image ads. In 2 weeks, I should see how the performance compares. I might be leaving a lot of money on the table!

24 hours of Firefox

I’m currently running Level 3 (Dead-Serious) Explorer Destroyer on this blog. Let’s see how it goes. These are my stats from WP-ShortStat from before the switch (I haven’t had it installed for a long time, but I don’t expect it to have changed much from here):

Invision Plus now serving AdSense & YPN

Invision Plus is now serving 50% AdSense, 50% YPN — for US visitors only. International users will see AdSense.

Four ad units

I’ve added a link unit to the header, a small button below the title, a small rectangle after the post, and a half banner after the comment box. Let’s see what happens.

AdSense Journal: US Targeting

I’m now geotargeting YPN ads for US users on Invision Plus forums (example: Support Forum). It looks reasonably good! US visitors will see 50/50 AdSense and Yahoo, while those outside the US will only get AdSense. I’ll test this for 7 days, then add images.

Hundred-dollar days

I’ve actually had a few hundred-dollar days with AdSense. The first that I see was Tuesday, May 3, 2005, when I earned $108.34. Of course, my average is a little below that :)

Large Rectangle & Collapsing Ad Units

I made two changes to my AdSense setup here today. First, I added a large rectangle to the footer. This should give you some links of interest when viewing any page of the blog. I also put this unit in its own custom channel, so I can see its effects separately. Second, I made all of the ad units collapsable, so that you don’t see any gaping whitespace when there aren’t any ads to show. Let’s see how this affects things.

Smallest AdSense Ad Unit

I’m doing a little experment with AdSense. Instead of running a large rectange at the top of the post, which I’ve been doing for the last couple of days, I’ve decided to switch it up a bit. I’m using AdSense’s smallest ad unit for the first time.
