Palm Treo and HotSync Over Bluetooth

Posted on September 30th, 2007 by Elliot

Short summary: it just doesn’t work well. It emulates a serial port, and goes pretty slowly if it works at all.
Then we had this weird error pop up, and I couldn’t find anything substantial on it in Google or Yahoo:
CCMGR.EXE failed to start because PDCMN21.DLL is missing.
Anyone out there have a suggestion?

10.8V and 14.4V Batteries Compatible?

Posted on September 29th, 2007 by Elliot

I don’t think they are, but the new battery I got has a sticker on it saying it’s 10.8v, while the official battery offered by Lenovo claims to be 14.4v. How is this?

Not a genuine Lenovo battery

Posted on September 29th, 2007 by Elliot

When I bought my IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad Z61t, I chose the lowest-end battery option because the battery is one of the easiest parts to replace in a laptop computer. I always intended to someday get a battery that would last longer, so that I could truly have laptop portability.
While preparing for BigSeminar X (more about it [...]

Sitemaps Content-Encoding gzip

Posted on September 29th, 2007 by Elliot

Sitemaps must have no more than 50,000 URLs and be less than 10 MB uncompressed. It was tricky for me to get gzip compression working in PHP, but I got it done and it works wonderfully. I had to piece it together with stuff from various sites, so I’ll sum it up here.
Before you start [...]

Working on a Disk…
I’m working on a disk. It’s has some nasty bad areas on the disk, so much so that I can’t use Acronis True Image to clone the data. It’s probably not completely necessary [...]

How to PXE Network Boot SpinRite

Posted on September 27th, 2007 by Elliot

Today a couple of laptops came in for repair. One is a super-thin Sharp laptop with a dead hard drive. What an opportunity to run SpinRite!, I thought. But there was just one problem: no disk nor disc drives of any kind.
These super-thin laptops have a hard drive, but no optical drive and definitely no [...]

Yahoo Podcasts Closing Down

Posted on September 27th, 2007 by Elliot

After two years of service, Yahoo! has announced that Yahoo Podcasts will be shutting down on Halloween, October 31st, 2007. The site never came out of beta.
There’s not much information– just an underlined non-link now on the top of the site which states: “Yahoo! apologizes deeply, but we will be closing down the Podcasts site [...]

Frozen iMac - AppleCare Works

Posted on September 26th, 2007 by Elliot

My iMac froze for the fifth time today, so I called up AppleCare at 1 (800) 275-2273 and talked with Josh. If you call them, have your computer’s serial number ready. It’s the first thing he asked me for, and I don’t think they’ll say anything without it.
Anyway, all we did was restart the computer [...]

OS X HP LaserJet 4P and NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED

Posted on September 25th, 2007 by Elliot

First of all, if printing doesn’t work, check the print queue. If you see NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED, remove the printer and add it again, but when it asks you to authenticate, try entering:
Username: guest
Password: guest
If you have an HP LaserJet 4P– like me– then make sure you choose the “HP LaserJet 4 series - Gimp-Print v5.0.0-beta2″ Printer [...]
