The really important thing to note is that Ctrl+A will usually work even when there is no “Edit” menu available. To use any Ctrl+Key shortcut, HOLD down the Ctrl key, and then PRESS the key, like you were trying to type a capital letter using SHIFT, but with CTRL instead. Once you’ve pressed the KEY, the action should take place immediately, and you can release both Ctrl and the Key.
