Tab doesn’t select checkboxes and buttons in Safari

Posted on November 3rd, 2007 by Elliot

This is yet another of those incredibly stupid default settings on all Macs. I cannot imagine why someone would want only Text boxes and lists to be selected when pressing tab on the keyboard. It’s maddening to try to navigate a form, only to find that the computer is forcing you to reach for the [...]

iPhone Won’t Charge?

Posted on October 5th, 2007 by Elliot

Last night, my iPhone wouldn’t charge, whether I plugged into my laptop or directly into the wall with the Apple-provided AC adapter. The icon at the top right showed a green battery with the lightning charging symbol, but the battery just wasn’t getting charged.
It was still showing 20% remaining or 10% remaining warnings, even after [...]

Unable to unarchive - Error 1 - Fixed!

This is a gem:
open up terminal in the utility directory and copy the into you home directory.

Here are some options for basic graphics editing. I’m a little surprised nothing comes by default, considering the whole iLife suite and all.

Poster Paint: designed to be like MS Paint, but in a very early beta stage since 2005, so it doesn’t look like updates are coming soon.
SeaShore: much more advanced graphics editor based on [...]

Recover from WindowServer crashes using one machine
OS X Lockup with Command-Tab
C2D Weird Locking Up, Freezing, Hanging
Instant Review: Aluminum iMac

Any fixes out there?
Update: I’ve spent a lot of time chatting with Apple Support and finally got transferred [...]

Mac hosts file doesn’t work - LookupOrder FFAgent

Posted on October 2nd, 2007 by Elliot

I was trying to set up my new Mac to be like my Windows PC for testing, so I need to have a few custom host names resolve to local IP addresses. All I could find in Google kept telling me to use /etc/hosts, or NetInfo Manager. I tried both of these methods and neither [...]

Frozen iMac - AppleCare Works

Posted on September 26th, 2007 by Elliot

My iMac froze for the fifth time today, so I called up AppleCare at 1 (800) 275-2273 and talked with Josh. If you call them, have your computer’s serial number ready. It’s the first thing he asked me for, and I don’t think they’ll say anything without it.
Anyway, all we did was restart the computer [...]

OS X HP LaserJet 4P and NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED

Posted on September 25th, 2007 by Elliot

First of all, if printing doesn’t work, check the print queue. If you see NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED, remove the printer and add it again, but when it asks you to authenticate, try entering:
Username: guest
Password: guest
If you have an HP LaserJet 4P– like me– then make sure you choose the “HP LaserJet 4 series - Gimp-Print v5.0.0-beta2″ Printer [...]

Mono vs Stereo and Converting in GarageBand ‘08

Posted on September 24th, 2007 by Elliot

In GarageBand, you can select the Input Source to be Mono 1, Mono 2, or Stereo 1/2. Here’s a good reference on mono vs. stereo.
Someone needs to write an article like this one but update it for iLife ‘08.
