“Revenge of the Nerds”
While you might be comfortable many other places, the place you’d really like to be is in the lab—computer or otherwise. You want to know what’s cutting edge in science and technology, and you want to be at the forefront of the innovations. If this is you, take a look at the following schools:

1. MIT:
Guidance counselors all over the country agree the MIT is the ultimate in research schools, “the paramount science and technology institute in the nation.” Its faculty includes some of the world’s most brilliant thinkers, several of them Nobel Prize winners.

2. Cal Tech:
Cal Tech students must become immersed in a demanding program that combines intense academic study with heavy-duty research. Not surprisingly, the school has graduated 15 Nobel Prize-winning scientists. With a shocking 3:1 student-to-professor ratio, there are more research opportunities than there are students to take advantage of them.

3. Carnegie Mellon University:
The one factor at Carnegie Mellon that most distinguishes students is their different academic disciplines. A sophomore states, “The school is very specialized in terms of majors, and most students come in knowing what it is they want to do and are thus very determined.” The engineering, computer science, and drama programs are unquestionably among the best in the nation.

4. Rice:
Rice is primarily known for science and engineering, but its humanities departments, particularly English and history, are gaining in reputation. A student describes the academics as being “taken very seriously. Workload is intense—most students take 15+ hours a semester. Most students double- or triple-major.”

5. Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology:
It consistently wins the title of best among engineering schools that don’t have a doctoral program, and its administration reports a near-100 percent job placement for graduation seniors. The small class sizes and intimate learning environment are what attract many students to Rose-Hulman. Students rave about the quality and accessibility of their professors.
