Math Education: An Inconvenient Truth

I enjoyed this video. It’s worth watching all the way through. Kids are taught clustering, triangles, magic sevens, and other intriguing concepts. These are very interesting ways to look at math. However, they completely lack regular core math skills because they don’t master the basic algorithms. They have a complete dependence on calculators. What do you think?

Wow, and here I thought people grabbing a calculator was just sheer laziness…I didn’t realize some of them just didn’t know how to do it.

Great explanation on why some progressive school systems can’t do the basics of teaching math. I never did like those new algorithms for basic math. KISS

Thanks for posting that. I had Everyday Math when I was in in first grade through fifth grade. I remember learning all of the deprecated methods she explained, though I never use them today.

If you find more information on things like this, please post them.

  4. Thanks for your honesty and for writing something on a positive note. There is so much negativity around the world in these troubled times, so I appreciate what you have said.

    Kind regards,
