Foreign Policy and Osama Bin Laden

Part 2 of Ron Paul’s speech at the College of Idaho 4/25/08. Part 1 here

We were allied with Osama bin Laden when he was a freedom fighter in Afghanistan. Now that we are the occupiers, he’s a terrorist. Obviously, our foreign policy is screwed up. Let’s change it. It’s not hard to do. It’s described in the Constitution and by the Founding Fathers.

Part 3

Empires do not end because of military reasons. They end due to financial problems. Just look at the Soviet system. We did not beat them. Their government collapsed because it was financially unsustainable.

The Patriot Act was not written in response to 9/11! It was written before 9/11. They were only waiting for an opportunity to push it on us.

  1. Michael says:

Not to say I disagree but rather I don’t totally agree. Regarding Osama Bin Laden, hind-sight is always 20-20. For some justifiable reason at the time, someone was most likely following the old adage “The enemy of my enemy is my friend.”

Of course we can see how that falls apart. But in that age, the bigger fear was Communism and the Soviet Union.

As for the Patriot Act. Maybe I read too many novels … but it would make sense that with the huge staff at the pentagon, they are always running scenarios and “What ifs …” I would expect and want to have numerous situations covered ahead of time. Someone should and probably is being paid to put together plans, many of which are never more than a theoretical exercise. This makes it easy to pull something off the shelf and revise to fit the needs of the moment.

  2. Sterling says:
